CHENNAI: Bird watchers in Chennai are preparing their binoculars to spend this weekend in birding places like Pallikaranai marshy land, perumbakkam wetlands, Kovalam creek and Pulicat Lake.
The migratory season has started this year with the arrival of a good number of birds. According to bird watchers, at least 60 species of birds can be seen at each of these places.
Chennai wildlife warden E Prashanth said he had visited Pulicat lake in the first week of this month. “That day, I was not able to see any migratory birds. I could only see many local birds. However, information has come that migratory birds have started coming in good numbers.”
Founder of Nature Trust, KVRK Thirunaranan, who is monitoring the migratory birds at four locations, said Pallikaranai has around 100 species of migratory birds. This is followed by 80 species in Kovalam Creek area, 60 in Pulicat and 50 in Perumbakkam.
He said that migratory birds have started coming to these four places from the first week of this month. At present, there are 6,000 birds in Pallikaranai, 2,500 in Kovalam, 1,200 in Pulicat and 500 in Perumbakkam.
The Perumbakkam wetlands attract many duck species. This time so far only a few of them have come. Expect more to come with the onset of winter. Many species of ducks fly from several thousand kilometers away. Siberia, Russia and the tundra region, he said.
Gray-headed lapwing, western marsh harrier, paradise flycatcher, brown shrike, lace-black-backed gull, white wagtail, pied avocet, oyster catcher and terek sandpiper are some of the migratory birds that can be seen at four locations.
A forest official said that some rare wild birds have arrived in Perumbakkam and migratory birds are yet to arrive at the place.
