Former India captain and batting great Sunil Gavaskar took a jibe at ‘faceless trolls’ targeting India pacer Mohammed Shami after India’s 10-wicket loss to arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai last week. Right-handed Tej was given religious abuses on social media after he could not take wickets in t20 world cup matching.

Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar sternly said that such online trolls “do not matter at all” as they have no identity.

“Does it matter to those who are making such remarks? I don’t think these faceless trolls matter. We don’t care what he has to say, because he has no identity,” said Sunil Gavaskar on India Today.

Apart from Gavaskar, several former cricketers stood by Shami after the embarrassing turn of events. Earlier on Friday, India captain Virat Kohli also spoke on this matter. He hit back at the trollers, saying targeting people for their faith is the “most pathetic thing”.

“For me, attacking someone’s religion is the most pathetic thing a human can do,” he said. He said that their ‘fraternity cannot be shaken’.

“We are doing what we are doing on the field and none of these (social media trolls) can even imagine doing something like this. They don’t have the courage or backbone to do so. That’s how I see things,” said Virat.
