MANGALURU: A 32-year-old mentally ill man, who was picked up from the railway station, fed and kept for almost a year, has been reunited with his family in Bihar. Lakhan Kumar was working as a cleaner in July last year when the driver dropped him. When he was found he had been without food for 10 days.
“When we arrived Mangaluru Junction In our ambulance to the railway station, Kumar was tired of hunger. He was afraid to come out of the shed for fear of the police and the pandemic. He was also mentally depressed. We immediately took him to a hospital and later shifted him to our rehabilitation center,” said Mohammad Asif, founder maimuna foundation. “We provided him food and took care of him at our center for about a year before sending him back to his family in Agu Chapra village of Siwan.”

Kumar had come Mangaluru Looking for a job and he was living till the lockdown. Left to fend for himself, without food or a place to live, Kumar became depressed. After wandering for several days, he took shelter in the shed of the railway station. Even after recovering from the foundation, he could not give the details of his family.
In September 2020, the organization rehabilitated a mentally challenged person roaming the streets with the help of the Dakshina Kannada Anjana Patel Samaj. Using its wide network across the country, the society found the person’s family in Jodhpur and sent him back. When members of the group saw Kumar at the center of the Foundation, they sent feelers again.
Lakhan Kumar’s family was traced to Siwan with the help of Patel Samaj President Panch Ram and other members. His brother Adhiraj Chauhan came here and took him back on 15th July.
