Pentagon on lockdown as multiple injuries reported in shooting in subway

WASHINGTON (AP) – Shots were fired Tuesday morning near the Pentagon’s entrance, injuring several people. The facility, the headquarters of the US Army, was placed on lockdown.

The Arlington County Fire Department reported “several patients”, but it was not immediately clear whether they were shot or the extent of the injuries.

“The scene is still active,” he said.

“The Pentagon is currently on lockdown due to an incident at the Pentagon Transit Center. We are asking the public to avoid the area,” the Pentagon’s security force said in a tweet statement.

The Pentagon Protection Force Protection Agency tweeted that the incident took place on a metro bus platform, part of the Pentagon Transit Center. The facility is just steps from the Pentagon Building in Arlington County, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, DC.

An Associated Press reporter near the building heard several gunshots, then a pause, then at least one additional shot.

Another AP reporter heard police shouting “shooter”.

A Pentagon announcement said the facility was on lockdown due to “police activity”.

Local news station WUSA showed a photo of heavy security and fire and rescue vehicles in the iconic five-sided building.

Metro trains were ordered to bypass the Pentagon due to a police investigation.

Climate crisis and responsible journalism

As environmental reporter for The Times of Israel, I try to explain the facts and science behind climate change and environmental degradation – and to explain and criticize the official policies affecting our future, and Israel. To describe the techniques that may become part of the solution.

I am passionate about the natural world and am disappointed by the dismal lack of awareness of environmental issues shown by most of the public and politicians in Israel.

I am proud to do my part to keep the readers of The Times of Israel properly informed about this important topic – which can and does affect policy change.
