Bhubaneswar, June 22 | Odisha Chief Minister and BJD President Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday appealed to all the MLAs of the state to support Draupadi Murmu, who has been nominated as the NDA candidate in the presidential election.
Patnaik, who is currently in Rome, made the appeal on Twitter.
“Appeal to all members of Odisha Legislative Assembly, across party lines, to unanimously support the daughter of #Odisha – Mrs.DraupadiMurmu for the highest office in the country,” he tweeted, clearly indicating that His party will support the NDA candidate. Raisina Hill Race
On Tuesday, Patnaik revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had discussed Murmu’s candidature before him. The CM also said that he was sure that Murmu would set a stellar example for women empowerment in the country.
The BJD has 114 members (including one expelled member), BJP 22, Congress nine, CPI(M) one and an independent in the 147-seat Odisha Assembly.
Patnaik’s BJP had also supported NDA candidates in the last two presidential elections (2012, 2017).
In 2017, Patnaik had backed NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind after receiving a call from the Prime Minister. At that time he had said that the post of President is above political considerations and BJD wants to keep it above politics.
Similarly, Patnaik had proposed the name of former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma against UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee for the 2012 presidential election.
