Surinder Singh, Taraura Kalan village president of BKU (Ekta Ugraha), said they had been protesting since November 9. “Twenty-five families are cultivating this land. The tillers belong to general, SC and BC categories, and pay Rs 12,500 per acre per year as lease value,” he said.
On contacting Patiala SDM Charanjit Singh, he held several meetings with the protesting farmers, but to no avail. “Panchayat resolution is sufficient for consent for acquisition of village land as per rules and there is no need for Gram Sabha resolution. We are still trying to resolve the issue amicably,” he said.
