At the age of 34, Chawla attributed his strong performances to consistent match practice, which was hard to get after he was not picked by any team in the IPL 2022 player auction and turned commentator. “I am one of those who prefer to bowl four overs in a match rather than bowl in the nets. You really get to know whether the ball is a good ball or a bad ball in the match. So I make sure I play a lot of matches whenever I get time.”

“Whenever there are good tournaments – the one in Delhi that you mentioned (All India SPJ Cup season 2) and then DY Patil in Mumbai – so I played them and also played domestic white-ball matches for Gujarat. Enough to prepare myself. And then obviously I make sure I work on my fitness as well,” he said at the post-match press conference.
