With the ruling BJP approaching the halfway point in the 40-seat assembly after Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant won the Sanquelim seat on Thursday, the man is full of smiles, and thanked the people of Goa for believing in him.

According to the Election Commission website, Sawant won the Sankelim seat by 300 votes and said he hoped to retain the chief minister’s post.
In an exclusive interview with News18, Sawant said, “I was confident that under the leadership of our central leaders and the way I was leading the campaign, we would get 22 seats. We were trailing in two seats but three independent candidates have supported us.”
Sawant said that though former CM Manohar Parrikar is no more with us, people have accepted the fact that they will support those who lead the BJP in Goa.
“The guidance that Parrikar has given us has brought us where we are today,” he told News18.
Sawant said he was looking forward to forming the government after a high-level meeting with the central leadership.
His wife Sulakshana Sawant stood with an even wider smile and jumped with joy. A proud Sawant patted her on her back for congratulating her on her husband’s victory.
“We complement each other and I see this victory as a victory for a lot of BJP workers who have tried their level best and got us victories in more than 20 constituencies. After 2012, the year 2022 is a new brand movement,” she said.
Early trends show that the BJP is leading in 19 seats, leaving behind the Congress, which is leading in 15 assembly seats.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis said, “The people of Goa have given us a clear majority. We will get 20 seats or 1-2 more seats. People have reposed faith in PM Modi. Independent candidates are coming with us. MGP is also coming with us and we will form our government by taking everyone along.
