Parliament approves bills on Homeopathy, National Commission for Indian System of Medicine

AYUSH Minister Sarbananda Sonowal introduced two bills in the Rajya Sabha, which were passed by voice vote after a brief discussion.

Parliament on Wednesday passed the National Commission for Homeopathy (Amendment) Bill, 2021 and the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (Amendment) Bill, 2021 after the Rajya Sabha gave its assent on Wednesday. Both the bills were passed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

As the House resumed at 7.04 pm after being briefly adjourned due to disruption by opposition parties, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge opposed the presence of marshals in the House, saying women MPs were not “safe”.

Amid sloganeering and protests by opposition parties, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the NDA government has the authority to pass laws and is doing so.

He also condemned the assault on house marshals by opposition members and criticized Tuesday’s incidents when some members of the opposition party climbed onto the official table.

The National Commission for Homeopathy (Amendment) Bill, 2021, proposes to amend the National Commission for Homeopathy Act, 2020 to provide for a medical education system that improves access to quality and affordable medical education.

The National Commission for the Indian System of Medicine (Amendment) Bill, 2021 seeks to repeal the Indian Medicines Central Council Act, 1970 and help make the Indian system of medical professionals available across the country.
