Paris Paralympics 2024, Day 1 Wrap: Archer Sheetal Devi Shines, Badminton Unit has Positive Day – News18

The Indian contingent got their Paris Paralympics 2024 underway on Thursday with a statement performance from archer Sheetal Devi, who registered a season-best to come in second in the Women’s Individual Compound Open Ranking Round to move into the 1/8 elimination round.

The badminton unit had encouraging results as well as star players Sukant Kadam, Nitesh Kumar, Thulasimathi Murugesen, Shivaraj Solaimalai, Tarun Dhillon all posted wins to move into the subsequent rounds of their respective events.

However, there was disappointment for the nation as the day’s lone cyclist Jyoti Gaderiya finished her qualifier event 10th and missed out on progress, while  Taekwondo athlete Aruna was handed a humbling defeat.

Para Badminton – Nitesh Kumar/Murugesan Thulasimathi beat Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj/Palak Kohli in Mixed Doubles SL3-SU5 Group Play Stage 21-14, 21-17.

Para-Badminton – Sivarajan Solaimalai/SIVAN Nithya Sre Sumathy beat Miles Krajewski/Jayci Simon (USA) in Mixed Doubles SH6 Group Play Stage 21-23, 21-11.

Para-Badminton – Mandeep Kaur vs Mariam Eniola Bolaji (Nigeria) in Women’s Singles SL3 Group Play Stage

Para Badminton – Manasi Joshi vs Qonitah Ikhtiar Syakuroh (Indonesia) in Women’s Singles SL3 Group Play Stage

Para Badminton – Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj beat Hikmat Ramdani (Indonesia) in Men’s Singles SL4 Group Play Stage 21-7, 21-5.

Para-Badminton – Tarun beat Rogerio Junior Xavier de Oliveira (Brazil) in Men’s Singles SL4 Group Play Stage 21-17, 21-19.

Para-Badminton – Nitesh Kumar beat Manoj Sarkar in Men’s Singles SL3 Group Play Stage  21-13, 18-21, 21-18

Para Cycling Track – Jyoti Gaderiya finished 10th and failed to qualify Women’s C1-3 3000m Individual Pursuit Qualifying.

Para Archery – Sheetal Devi finished second to qualify for the 1/8 elimination round, and Sarita finished 9th to qualify for the 1/16 elimination round in the Women’s Individual Compound Open Ranking Round.

Para Archery – Harvinder Singh finished 9th to qualify for the 1/16 elimination round in the Men’s Individual Recurve Open Ranking Round.

Para-Badminton – Palak Kohli beat Milena Surreau (France) in Women’s Singles SL4 Group Play Stage 21-12, 21-14.
