Gold eluded defending champion Neeraj Chopra as he signed off with a silver in the men’s javelin throw event of Paris Olympics.

Neeraj Chopra took to social media to thank Indians for their support and well wishes after he clinched the silver in the men’s javelin throw event at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“Feeling good to win another Oympi medal for India. This time our national anthem did not play in Paris but hardwork will for that in the future,” Neeraj Chopra posted on X, formerly Twitter.

“Very proud to be on the podium for India once again at the Olympic Games. Thank you for the love and support. Jai Hind,” he added.

It was the season’s best effort from the Indian, topping his qualification throw of 89.34m, but was nowhere close to being enough for gold. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem managed an astonishing 92.97m in his second attempt to set the bar too high for the rest of the field, including Chopra, who seemed under pressure and managed just one legitimate throw. The earlier Olympic record stood at 90.57m in the name of Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway, set during the 2008 Beijing Games. Nadeem also signed off in style with a closing throw of 91.79m, more that Neeraj’s best on the night.

The Indian superstar failed in his bid to win a second consecutive gold medal at the Olympics as Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem took home the top prize.

Chopra though became the first Indian track-and-field athlete to win two successive Olympic medals. The 26-year-old also became only the third Indian to win back-to-back Olympic medals after PV Sindhu and Sushil Kumar.
