Paresh Rawal: Regional cinema is getting better content from Hindi films. Unique

Paresh Rawal is returning to Gujarati cinema after 40 years with Dear Father.

Actor Paresh Rawal says he started a Gujarati film after 40 years because of the growing content and audience in regional cinema.

Veteran actor Paresh Rawal will return to Gujarati cinema with his upcoming film Dear Father, after 40 years of starring in Naseeb Ni Balihari. An adaptation of his play of the same title, the film is a combination of a family drama and a taut thriller. In an interaction with News18.com, the actor says that he decided to make a comeback to Gujarati cinema thanks to the emerging audience.

“For many years, I wanted to work in a Gujarati film, but things were not happening. My last outing which was 40 years ago was not a good experience. But things have changed a lot. The Gujarati audience is very mature, the upbringing and sensitivity with which they have been crafted is very good. They are very hungry and keen to watch good content, so I don’t think we can give them substandard films.”

The Hera Pheri actor says the second reason was the rise of regional cinema over the years. “Better content is coming from regional cinema than Hindi films. We cannot say Pushpa: The Rise or RRR regional cinema anymore. In fact, they are bigger than Hindi films. I believe they are more national than national films. They are far more developed than many films made for national audiences. They touch on stories and themes that go far beyond formal commercial cinema. Hence the lines between regional and Hindi cinema have become completely blurred. The idea is to make films in Gujarati which have been made in other languages.”

Talking about Dear Father, Rawal says that the idea of turning it into a film was started by Ashutosh Gowariker. The Thr actor explains, “In 2013, Ashutosh bought the rights for my play as he wanted to turn it into a film. But it didn’t work out, so we took it in our hands. I gave the idea to Ratan Jain of Venus Films. This drama is running successfully since 2011 and we have completed more than 430 shows. The emotional impact of this is so much that many times people come backstage after the show to cry and share about their father. We thought it would be a great way to reach a wider audience by making a film.”
