He replaces Amitabh Kant, who stepped down on 30 June.
According to an official statement, Iyer, a 1981 batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, has worked with both the public and private sectors.
He was Secretary in the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation during 2016-17.
“With over 25 years of experience in the water and sanitation sector, Iyer led the implementation of India’s flagship $20 billion Swachh Bharat Mission, which successfully provided 550 million people access to safe sanitation,” the statement said. ”

Iyer also said that he is deeply grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving him another opportunity to work under his leadership towards a transformed India.
Kant was appointed as the CEO of NITI Aayog on February 17, 2016 for a fixed two-year term and was later given an extension. His term ended on June 30.
