Fast bowler Waqar Younis is backing Pakistan to win the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia, to say that the pitches below can favor the team’s batsmen and powerful bowling attack.
The T20 showpiece is to be held in October-November.
“We have a really good chance of doing well in this World Cup,” Waqar told ICC Digital.
The former head coach of Pakistan was of the opinion that the pitches in Australia would be in favor of their batsmen.
“Australia pitches are usually very good batting pitches and Pakistan has got good batsmen who can play really well in these conditions,” he said.
Pakistan, who are currently ranked third in the ICC men’s T20I team rankings, have had good results in the shortest format in the last 12 months.
Waqar, who is Pakistan’s second-highest wicket-taker in both Tests and ODIs, said star batsman Babar Azam will play a key role in the top-order.
“Babar (Azam) is definitely going to be an important batsman in the top order,” he added.
“I think his (Babar) influence will be what he has always been and then of course Rizwan is playing very well and the bowling attack he has got is one of the best in the world,” he added.
Pakistan’s bowling attack consists of pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, with spinners Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz complementing them.
“We have tried about six or seven fast bowlers in the last one year and all of them are doing really well,” Waqar said.
“Pakistan’s fast bowling attack is very good and they can combine it with Shadab and Nawaz because they are good spinners too,” he added.
Pakistan won the T20 World Cup in 2009, and reached the semi-finals of the 2021 edition in the United Arab Emirates.
