The Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) on Monday said that a Pakistani mountaineer Asif Bhatti is stuck on Nanga Parbat, the ninth highest mountain in the world, Dawn reported.

According to Karrar Hydari, ACP general secretary, “Bhatti is stuck at Camp 4 at an altitude of 7,500-8,000 meters due to snow blindness and needs help.” Bhatti has been identified as a professor at a university in Islamabad.

It is said that he was on his way to the final summit of the peak when he got stuck. According to Hydari, several organizations were attempting to climb the summit and some of their members reported that Bhatti was suffering from snow blindness.

“A helicopter would be required to pick him up but for that he would have to come at an altitude of around 6,000-6,500 metres,” he added. Bhatti, along with other mountaineers Lt Col (R) Dr Jabbar, Dr Naveed Saad Muhammad and Faheem Pasha had left for the expedition a few days ago. According to Dawn, Haidari said, “The other members of his team have not yet started their final summit.”

Separately, the Karakoram Club, an organization working for adventure tourism in Pakistan, said a group of climbers from the Karakoram expedition in Shimshal were preparing a rescue operation to bring back Bhatti. ,” it added.

According to Dawn, mountaineer Shehroze Kashif has also volunteered to be a part of the rescue operation. “I request the concerned department to consider taking me to base camps or even higher camps for more participation,” he added.

This year many climbers are attempting to climb the summit. On Sunday, at least 52 climbers including 11 Pakistanis scaled Nanga Parbat. With a death probability of 21 percent, Nanga Parbat continues to claim its place among the top five most dangerous mountains in the world. So far 85 climbers have died while trying to climb the peak.
