Pakistan will have Australia-like pitches to prepare for T20 World Cup 2022

Former cricketer and current Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) president Ramiz Raja believes that the country’s cricketers have not been given enough importance in the past to prepare them according to specific situations. He blames the lack of preparedness as one of the reasons for Pakistan’s disappointing overseas performance. Additionally, statistics and past records show that the country’s batsmen have struggled to adapt on bouncy tracks and their bowlers have also been unable to shine in countries such as Australia and South Africa.

In Australia, Pakistan has won just four out of 37 Tests while losing 26. In South Africa, it has won only two Tests out of 15, with 12 losses. To better prepare them for overseas tours and give them a better chance of series wins in these countries, Pakistan is ordering two drop-in pitches to emulate Australian conditions.

Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, Rameez Raja said, “Earlier it was not given enough importance, but for me as a cricketer and now as a PCB chairman, it is painful to see that it has not been given its due. Nor is it right. It’s a really important element, and when I say I want to reset Pakistan cricket’s GPS it’s basically fixing the core of our cricket. And as long as the pitches are fine No, we are not going anywhere because this is the heartbeat of cricket.”

Drop-in pitches will be installed in 2022 at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and National Stadium in Karachi.

According to the PCB chairman, Australia’s victory in the T20 World Cup held in the UAE served as a wake-up call as he believes that a team’s greatness is determined by its ability to win overseas .

“We just saw Australia coming to the Middle East, adapting well, and winning the T20 World Cup in conditions where we should have made a difference,” he added.

He clarified that he was aware that a drop-in pitch may not be a foolproof solution and may in fact be a quick, short-term solution, but the intention remains to prepare and at least be able to challenge the opponent in these circumstances. Especially for the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia in 2022. The PCB has signed an MoU with investment firm Arif Habib Group, which will cover the procurement cost of PKR 37 crore.
