Sharing a copy of his resignation on Twitter, Suri said his move reflects his association with his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and his vision of democracy.

The 53-year-old politician tweeted, “We will never compromise on the sovereignty and integrity of Pakistan. We will fight for the country’s interests and freedom. We will go to any extent to protect Pakistan.”

According to Geo TV’s report, the no-confidence motion has no significance after Suri’s resignation, while the newly-elected Speaker will decide whether to accept the resignation or not.

Suri has faced severe criticism in recent days over his decision to reject the no-confidence motion against former prime minister Khan and adjourn the session scheduled for the election of the NA president from April 16 to April 22.

Just before the election of Shehbaz Sharif as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan on 11 April, lawmakers from the party of ousted Prime Minister Khan decided to resign from the National Assembly.

Khan’s PTI on Thursday announced that Suri had accepted the resignations of 123 MPs and the National Assembly (NA) secretariat had also issued a notification on the issue.

The PPP and the PML-N alleged that Suri pressured the National Assembly Secretariat to accept the resignation.

According to the rules of the National Assembly, immediately after the election of the Speaker, the Assembly shall proceed to elect a Deputy Speaker and once elected, he shall take oath before the Assembly before entering into office.

Another alliance partner, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl’s Shahida Akhtar Ali, is said to be the frontrunner for the deputy speaker’s post.
