Pakistan’s Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Wednesday dismissed reports of the army chief asking Prime Minister Imran Khan to resign. Choudhary briefly interacted with the media in Islamabad, where he was asked about reports of a meeting between Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa and Prime Minister Khan. Confirming the meeting between Gen Bajwa and PM Khan, the minister said, “Neither the army chief has sought his resignation nor will he resign.” The mighty military, which has ruled Pakistan for more than half of its 73-plus years of existence, has so far wielded considerable power in matters of security and foreign policy.

Chowdhury compared the current political situation and the apparent weakness of the Prime Minister with the condition of the Pakistan cricket team during the 1992 Cricket World Cup. He said, ‘It is like the 1992 World Cup. Obviously we (opposition) are behind but in reality we are not.

Khan often refers to the World Cup that the Pakistan team won under his captaincy. Earlier, Home Minister Sheikh Rashid had also said that the Prime Minister would not resign and would fight till the last ball of the last over. Prime Minister Khan has effectively lost a majority in parliament after joining the ranks of the opposition, a key ally of the ruling coalition, which has introduced a no-confidence motion against his government in the National Assembly.

Khan needs 172 votes in the lower house of 342 to thwart the opposition’s attempt. However, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islama Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said the opposition has the support of 175 MPs and the prime minister should resign.
