Pakistan lies between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates and lies on the Indus-Tsangpo suture region, about 200 km north of the Himalayan front, which makes the region susceptible to earthquakes.
The region has the highest rate of seismicity and the largest earthquakes in the Himalayan region, mainly due to motion on the thrust fault. The country has experienced several earthquakes in recent years.
This is not the first time that a major earthquake has occurred in Balochistan province, which remains mostly open and mountainous and with many people living in remote areas.
A massive earthquake struck parts of the province in September 2013, but its epicenter was in the Avaran district, killing about 825 people and injuring thousands and damaging thousands of homes in the southwestern province.
One of the worst earthquakes to hit the country in recent years was on October 8, 2005, which killed more than 74,000 people.
