Pak PM Imran Khan talks to Russian President Putin; discussion on afghan situation

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday and discussed the evolving situation along with regional and bilateral interests. Afghanistan, urged that the world should engage with the war-weary country rather than be left alone at this critical juncture. According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Khan received a telephone call from President Putin and the two leaders exchanged views on issues of regional and bilateral interest.

Prime Minister Khan underscored the need for the international community to remain engaged in Afghanistan, emphasizing that “the Afghan people should not be abandoned at this critical time. The importance of peace and stability in Afghanistan to regional security and prosperity.” Underlining the urgent need for the provision of humanitarian assistance to the country and the imperative to avert the economic crisis.

The Prime Minister stressed that the close coordination and consultation between Pakistan and Russia on the emerging situation in Afghanistan was of vital importance. Recalling their last telephone conversation on 25 August, the two leaders exchanged views on the latest developments in Afghanistan, bilateral cooperation and cooperation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

In the bilateral context, the Prime Minister emphasized growing cooperation in a number of areas and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to further upgrade the overall relationship. He emphasized that strengthening trade, investment and energy cooperation is a cornerstone of engagement with Russia.

He also reaffirmed his government’s resolve to complete the Pakistan Stream gas pipeline project at the earliest. The two leaders also invited each other to visit their respective countries.

According to the statement, the two leaders agreed to remain in close contact. Pakistan’s defense ties with Russia have gone beyond bitter Cold War hostilities in recent years, and the cooling in ties between Pakistan and the US has pushed the country towards Russia and China.

Russia and Pakistan have been conducting joint exercise – DRUZHBA annually since 2016. In October 2016, they conducted their first joint military exercise in Pakistan.
