Noted Tollywood lyricist Shri Sirivenela Sitaram Shastri passed away on Tuesday afternoon at 4.07 pm. He died of complications related to lung cancer. Sirivanella was admitted to KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad on November 24 with pneumonia. He was put on ECMO to support his lungs in the ICU and was under close observation for the past few days but later succumbed to his condition.

He is survived by his wife and two sons. He has won Nandi Awards 12 times. He was also awarded the Padma Shri award. He wrote lyrics for more than 3000 songs.

His first film was K Vishwanath’s Sirivanella, which is considered a classic. Swayam Krishi, Swarna Kamalam, Shrutilayalu, Siva, Kshana Kshanam, Swathi Kiranam, Dhana, Govinda Govinda, Criminal, Gulabi, Murari, and Seethma Vakitallo Sirimalle Chettu were some of his best works. His recent biggest hit song was Samaj Varagamana in Ala Vaikunthapuramlu (2020) starring Allu Arjun and Pooja Hegde.

He is considered one of the greatest lyricists in the Telugu film industry along with Veturi and Atreya. Reports in Asia Net News suggested that Sirivanella was a chain smoker and this could have been one of the causes of his condition. Reportedly, he used to stay up late at night and smoke, which could have affected his health.
