Padma Shri: Padma Shri for Lakadong Pioneer, 94 Year Old Journalist | Guwahati News – Times of India

Aizawl: A Woman Agriculturist Meghalaya and 94 year old working journalist from Mizoram was honored Padma Shri by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday.
While journalist Lalbikatanga Pachuau was awarded for her contribution to literature and education journalism, Trinity Sayu, a mother of six and grandmother of eight, from the non-described Mulih village in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district, won the award for her leadership. Agriculture, especially the cultivation of the globally famous “Lakadong” variety of turmeric, which has financially uplifted the lives of many farmers.
Considered the oldest working journalist in the entire country, Pachuau still edits his own local daily, “Zoram Talangau”, published from the city of Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram.
Being a World War II veteran, Pachuau received several medals during his career in the military, including the Burma Star, the Medal of Freedom, the J&K Medal and the Military Service Medal. After retiring from the army, he engaged in social work and became a journalist in 1980.
“I am humbled and honored to be awarded the Padma Shri. I also thank the government and especially KN Kumar (Chairman of Meghalaya Farmers (Empowerment) Commission) and others, apart from the farmers of Meghalaya, for this recognition,” An excited Saiyu said. She has been leading over 1,000 women farmers in the state to cultivate and popularize the indigenous, high curcumin content Lakdong variety since 2003.
