The explosion occurred at an oxygen unit of the Sheema Steel re-rolling mill in the industrial town of Sitakunda at 4:30 pm (10:30 IST), trapping “several workers” inside the plant, local police chief Tofail Ahmad said.

At least five people were killed and dozens injured in an explosion on Saturday at an oxygen plant outside Bangladesh’s port city of Chittagong. The officers provided this information.

Local police chief Tofail Ahmad said the explosion rocked an oxygen unit at the Sheema Steel re-rolling mill in the industrial town of Sitakunda at 4:30 pm (10:30 GMT), trapping “several workers” inside the plant.

“The fire brigade has brought the fire under control and they have evacuated people from the plant,” he said.

At least five people were killed and 25 others wounded in the blast, district administrator Mohammad Fakhruzzaman told AFP.

Eyewitness Muslim Uddin said the explosion was “so loud and devastating” that it shook all residential houses in the area.

The glasses of many houses were broken. The whole area went dark,” he told AFP.

The government has ordered an inquiry into the blast.

Industrial explosions and fires are common in Bangladesh, where safety enforcement by factory officials is poor.

In June last year, more than 50 people were killed in a fire and subsequent explosions at a container depot in the same industrial city.
