SC refuses to stay Varanasi court proceedings
The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay the proceedings of the Varanasi Court while hearing the petition of the Muslim side in the Gyanvapi Masjid case. A bench of Justice DY Chandrachud made it clear that the Muslim community should not be stopped from offering Namaz in the mosque. The court has issued a notice on the petition of the Muslim side and sought a response from the Hindu side. The next hearing will be on May 19.

What happened in the first day’s hearing in the Supreme Court
The hearing of the case started in the Supreme Court. The Muslim side claimed that without Wuzu Namaz is not possible. To this the UP government replied that vaju can be done anywhere.

Ahmadi: Varanasi court limited the number of prayers. We have applied there.
Justice Chandrachud: We will order the court to settle it soon.
Ahmadi: In the Ayodhya case, the Supreme Court has said that the Places of Worship Act is applicable to all religious places. Sealing was ordered without submitting the survey report and without listening to the Muslim side. It should be cancelled.
Justice Chandrachud: We are issuing notice. If Shivling is found in the survey, then it should be preserved, but for this one should not be stopped from offering Namaz.
Tushar Mehta (Solicitor General appearing for UP Government): The Shivling is in the Wazukhana of the Masjid. The place of prayer is different. I want to know the facts. Then order. Shivling can be damaged.

Justice Chandrachud: We will order the security of that place.
Mehta: We also wish that your order should not have any undesired effect on the other party.
Ahmadi: If the court ordered protection, then the situation at that place would change.
Mehta: If someone sets foot on the Shivling, the law and order situation may get affected. Wudu can happen anywhere.
Justice Chandrachud: The UP government should tell where is the Shivling found in the mosque?
Mehta: I am not aware of the whole situation. The situation will be clear after seeing the commission’s report.
Ahmadi: Namaz is being interrupted due to ceiling.
Justice Chandrachud: We are issuing notice and will hear on May 19. Till then the DM should ensure that Shivling is not harmed and Namaz is not interrupted.
