Hyderabad: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has now said that Muslims are using contraception the most. The remarks came a day after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s statement on ‘population imbalance’. “His own health minister said that there is no law needed in the country for population control. It is Muslims who are using most contraceptives. The total fertility rate which was 2.6 in 2016 is now 2.3. Demographic of the country Dividend is best among all countries,” Asaduddin Owaisi, AIMIM leader was quoted as saying by ANI.
Yogi Adityanath on Monday had said that “population stabilization” should be the same among different sections of the people, and expressed concern over the possibility of “chaos” at some point if there is an “imbalance” in a country. “It should not happen that the pace of population growth or the percentage of a community is high and we stabilize the population of ‘Mulnivasi’ (native residents) through awareness or enforcement,” he said.
Owaisi also asked whether Muslims are not native to India. ANI quoted Owaisi as saying, “Aren’t Muslims native to India? If we see the reality, the natives are only tribal and Dravidian people. In UP, without any laws, desired fertility rate is achieved by 2026-2030 Will go.”
Yogi’s remarks on World Population Day have attracted a lot of controversies. Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday said that anarchy is not caused by population but because of destruction of democratic values. “Anarchy does not arise from population, but from destruction of democratic values,” Yadav said in a Hindi tweet.
Another Samajwadi Party leader and Sambhal MP, Shafiqur Rehman Barak, also accused the Uttar Pradesh government of looking at population growth from a “special angle” to garner votes in the 2024 general election. He told reporters on Monday night that the rapid increase in population could be effectively dealt with by focusing on education for all instead of considering a law. He said that it is up to the Almighty to give birth to a child. When a child is delivered by Allah, the risks associated with it are also sent by the Almighty, the MP said.
Meanwhile, BJP leader and former Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has advised people to change their mindset by tweeting on this matter., He tweeted and wrote that, “Big population explosion is not a threat to any religion, it is a threat to the country, it is not appropriate to associate it with caste and religion.”
The UP Law Commission had earlier submitted the draft of the Uttar Pradesh Population (Control, Stabilization and Welfare) Bill, 2021 to the BJP government in the state in the last few months of Adityanath’s previous term. The proposed law encouraged families to follow the two-child norm, and some critics suggested that it targeted the state’s Muslim community. However, the government rejected the allegation.
