“She is overwhelmed, but also complained that I didn’t greet her earlier. She is inundated with messages. When we called her there was a lot of noise in the background. A celebration was going on,” says Sanchari Das Molik’s mother Are

As the Best Documentary Short Subject award winner at the Oscars was announced, an elderly couple – Shobha Das Molik and Sadan Das Molik – were in tears in Kolkata’s Golf Green area. One of the editors of the winning work, ‘Elephant Whispers’, the first Indian production to win the honour, is his daughter Sanchari Das Molik.

Shobha Das Molik is a Professor of Mass Communication. He taught at St. Xavier’s Institute in the 1999 and 2000 batches, while Molik’s grandfather Manajendu Majumdar was a founder of the Calcutta Film Society along with Satyajit Ray.

“Winning an Oscar is a big thing, we never dreamed that Sanchari is a part of a film, we will get it. I was happy when the film got nominated. We thought it was a great achievement. And then there was victory. I texted him around 7 am and spoke to him around noon,” said a proud Shobha Das Molik.

“The communicator is overwhelmed, but also complains that I didn’t congratulate her at the same time. It is full of messages. He told us that it was a different experience. There was a lot of noise in the background, but we understood that it was a celebration.

Sadan Das Maulik said: “He was very enthusiastic. They went to Los Angeles a long time ago, the atmosphere was positive. Even Variety magazine wrote yesterday that he might get it.”

Shobha said, ‘Molik started editing the film from 2021.’ “She was in Goa when the film came to her. This was his first documentary, although he has edited my documentaries a couple of times. I have seen him working hard on commercials and feature films.”

Shobha Das Molik recalled how in November, when Molik came to Kolkata, she said she was satisfied with the editing as the final touches had been given by Douglas Blush, a senior editor.

“He told us that the film will be screened at the New York Festival, I was very happy. Bengal has again got the Oscar touch after Satyajit Ray. Even though he only edited it, it feels great that Ray’s film Later the name of my daughter’s film will come…”

The parents were excited when Malik’s classmates turned up for the celebration.

Batchmate Vikram said, “It is a great honor for the Batch of 2002 Mass Communication and Video Production Course from St. Xavier’s College. The college has already achieved many achievements. It is a proud day for India, Bengal and Sanchari Das Malik.
