Our Right Place in Top 50, Backward Because of ‘Perception’, Former Director of IIT Delhi on QS Ranking

Describing the six parameters on which QS ranks institutions, they include Academic Reputation from the Global Survey, which has the highest weighting of 40 percent, Employer Reputation from the Global Survey with a 10 percent weightage. The faculty-student ratio and the citation per faculty Scopus carry 20 percent weightage each. The remaining 10 percent weightage is distributed equally between the ‘ratio of international students’ and ‘ratio of international faculty’.

Stating that 50 percent weightage includes the reputation metrics, the professor said perception is a “completely subjective metric” because “what you ask decides where you are ranked.” “We need to improve our perception. Indian institutions are scoring very poorly here,” he added.

He further added, “Among all the parameters, the citation per faculty is the most definitive parameter and is taken from reliable databases. This is where Indian institutes are excelling right now with IISc being at the top. On this metric, most of our toppers Intuition is in the top 100.”

“So if (we) are performing poorly in these categories, it is not because our top institutions are not research intensive or poor in quality. It is because of perception and lack of international footprint.” He wrote in a social media post. said in.

In the QS World University Rankings 2023 edition, released on Wednesday, IIT Delhi made it to the top 200 world institutions with an improved rank of 174 out of 1422 institutes globally. IIT Delhi has shown better performance in QS WUR 2023 with an overall score of 46.5 than its previous year’s overall score of 45.9. A marked improvement was shown in perception metrics, along with scores of 49 in academic reputation (45.8 last year) and employer reputation 79.2 (70.8 last year). The ranks in Academic Reputation and Employer Reputation have improved by 12 and 23 positions respectively over the last year.

Suggesting measures for IIT Delhi along with other institutions to improve the ranking in the perception matrix, the former director said, “With our top institutions going global and developing an international footprint, our ranking in these world rankings is The safest and fastest way to reach the right place. We need to do this without compromising on our other quality indicators.”
