Our Blues Writer Noah Hee-kyung on Creating Omnibus Format K-Drama: Sick and Tired of Seeing Only Male, Female Leads

Netflix’s upcoming series Our Blues will introduce a new format of K-dramas where stories will be told in an all-encompassing format. Written by popular author Noh Hee-kyung and starring Kim Kyu-tae, the series is set in the backdrop of the island of Jeju in South Korea and revolves around the stories of several people who are either on the edge of something or are about to begin. There are some new ones. Ahead of the release of the play, the actors along with the director and writer came together for a press conference where they gave an insight into what life was going to be like on the island.

During the conversation, writer Noah also cited the reason for making it in an all-encompassing format, a style not typically seen in mainstream-drama. He shared, “An omnibus genre is something I’ve wanted to try in a drama series for over 10 years. I was sick and tired of just seeing a male lead and a female lead. We all have main characters in our lives. But why is it that everything in a play revolves around just two people. And those questions have led me to choose an all-encompassing genre. And I chose Jeju because I believe it is one such The place is where the local sentiments are intact. The whole neighborhood in Jeju can be of blood and if not they are very close to each other. And it was something that I could really use to portray Korean culture “

Fans are looking forward to the series as it marks the return of actor Kim Woo-bin to the small screen after recovering from cancer. He was last seen in the 2016 series Uncharacteristically Shaukeen, after which the actor was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer. Nervous about his return, he is also thankful that he is getting a chance to meet everyone and be a part of the drama.

Wu-bin said, “At the beginning, I’m nervous. It’s been a long time so I’m very nervous. I appeared in a scripted variety show and a few commercials, but I’m very happy and thank you very much that I am one.” Will be able to appear in the drama series and meet you all.”

One of the uninvited actors, Shin Min-e, is also his real life partner. However, the lovers have not been cast opposite each other and will be seen romancing other actors in the series. Explaining the reason for casting real-life lovers and connecting them with other people, writer Noah said, “I knew they would not be involved in the project if they appeared as a couple. When I was casting them, I told them that they would not be seen as a couple and that each of them would have a romantic relationship with someone else. And thankfully they were fine with that. I wanted to cast him because he is a great actor and I didn’t think of anything else.”

The couple has been quite private about their relationship.

Meanwhile, Out Blues also stars Lee Byung-hun, Cha Seung-won, Lee Jung-eun, Uhm Jung-hwa and Han Ji-min in pivotal roles. It will stream on Netflix from April 9.
