‘…or we will have no face’: Sidhu in fresh attack, demands removal of officials in 2015 sacrilege case

Angry former Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday hit out at former CM Amarinder Singh and once again demanded the removal of the Attorney General and the DGP in the 2015 sacrilege case.

Our government came in 2017 to demand justice in sacrilege cases and arrest the main culprits of drug trade and because of their failure, people removed the last CM. Now AG/DG appointments sprinkle salt on the wounds of the victims, they should be replaced or else we will have no face!!”

The sacrilege of a Sikh religious scripture and subsequent police firing in Punjab’s Faridkot in 2015 that killed two people is one of the issues that sparked a spat between former chief ministers Amarinder Singh and Navjot Sidhu.

Earlier this week, breaking his silence a day after his abrupt resignation from the post of Punjab Congress chief, Sidhu had questioned the appointment of Director General of Police, Advocate General and “tainted” leaders.

He said that he is ready to make any kind of sacrifice but will always stand by his principles.

Throwing the Congress into a fresh crisis, months ahead of the assembly elections in the state, Sidhu tendered his resignation on Tuesday soon after the allocation of portfolios to the members of the new state cabinet led by Charanjit Singh Channi.

Several party leaders including ministers Pargat Singh and Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, MLA Inderbir Singh Bolaria and Punjab Congress working president Pawan Goyal visited him at his residence in Patiala on Wednesday.

Sidhu said on Twitter that his aim has always been to improve people’s lives and “make a difference”.

“My dear Punjabis, my political journey of 17 years has been for one purpose – to improve the lives of the people of Punjab, to bring about change and to take a stand on the politics of issues. This has been my “Dharma” and my duty .

“As of today, I have no personal enmity with anyone and neither have I fought a personal battle,” Sidhu said in the over four-minute video clip shared on his Twitter handle.

“My fight has been on issues and pro-Punjab agenda, for which I have stood for a long time,” he said.

Sidhu said, “My father once told me that wherever there is any confusion, one should always follow the path of truth with moral authority and without compromising on moral values.”

Clearly referring to senior IPS officer Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota, who has been given the additional charge of Director General of Punjab Police, Sidhu said, “Today, I see that there is an agreement on those issues.”

Referring to the incidents of Guru Granth Sahib in Faridkot in 2015, he said that his first priority is to fight for justice which people are eagerly waiting for.
