Opposition MPs move privilege motion notice against Ranjan Gogoi in Rajya Sabha; Former CJI’s response

Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) and Rajya Sabha MP Ranjan Gogoi on Wednesday reacted to the privilege motion moved against him in the Rajya Sabha by several opposition MPs, saying the law will take its own course.

When asked about Rajya Sabha MPs moving a privilege motion against him over his remarks of attending the proceedings of the House, the former CJI told ANI, “Law will take its own course.”

Earlier on Monday, two TMC MPs submitted a notice to move a privilege motion against former Chief Justice of India and Rajya Sabha member Ranjan Gogoi over his remarks about attending Parliament. According to a PTI report, the notices of TMC members Jawahar Sarkar and Mausam Noor are yet to be accepted by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat.

Besides him, several other MPs from various opposition parties have also given notice of privilege motion against Gogoi. This includes MPs from Shiv Sena, Samajwadi Party, Muslim League and CPI(M). He has filed a notice for privilege motion on Gogoi’s remarks about attending Parliament.

In an interview to a news channel, Gogoi reportedly said that in view of the COVID restrictions and lack of social distancing, he prefers to participate in the Rajya Sabha when he feels like it and when he feels there are important matters. on which they should speak. Gogoi also reportedly said that he is a nominated member and is not governed by any party whip.

Meanwhile, sources told PTI that TMC MPs are also expected to file a complaint against Ranjan Gogoi with the ethics committee.

Ranjan Gogoi served as the 46th Chief Justice of India for 13 months between 2018 and 2019. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Ram Nath Kovind on March 16, 2020.
