Opposition demands President’s rule in Karnataka over corruption allegations

As opposition parties mount pressure on the Karnataka government over allegations of corruption, former chief minister Siddaramaiah has approached the governor to impose President’s rule in the wake of serious complaints of bribery allegations by the contractors’ union.

“Corruption amounts to several thousand crores and the PM has not taken any action despite complaints. This shows that both the central and state governments have included corruption,” Siddaramaiah said in his plea.

He has demanded a judicial inquiry on the complaint by the contractor union.

“A preliminary report by the Anti-Corruption Bureau shows a loss of just over Rs 300 crore to the Bangalore Development Authority. Of the total budget funds released for any project, 40 per cent goes for bribes, while 12-28 per cent goes as GST, 5-6 per cent as EMD. If the contractor takes a loan to complete a project, then he pays at least 12 percent interest, so what will be left with the contractor to complete the work? The total estimated expenditure for the year 2021-22 is Rs 2,47,000 crore, of which Rs 1,50,000 crore is paid towards salaries, pensions and repayment of past borrowings. Only around Rs 1,00,000 crore is available for development,” the opposition leader said in his letter to the governor.

The letter comes a day after huge cash was recovered in raids by the Anti-Corruption Bureau on officials across Karnataka.

In Karnataka too, voting for 25 seats of the Legislative Council will be held in early December, while the winter session is also scheduled to begin from December 13.
