Opposition boycotts Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha over suspension of MPs

Opposition parties intensified their protest on Tuesday against the suspension of 12 Rajya Sabha MPs. Opposition MPs from both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha boycotted Parliament that day and marched to Vijay Chowk demanding revocation of the suspension.

Speaking to reporters here after the protests, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that the action initiated against the Members of Parliament symbolizes the suppression of the voice of the people of India. “He has been suspended for two weeks now. They are sitting outside. His voice is suppressed. They have not done anything wrong,” Gandhi said.

‘Democracy Murder’

Gandhi said the opposition is not allowed to discuss important issues in Parliament.

“We are not allowed to debate things in Parliament. Bill after bill, gets passed in a ruckus. This is not the way to run Parliament. The Prime Minister does not come to the House and whenever we want to raise an issue of national importance, we are not allowed to do so. This is very unfortunate; This is the murder of democracy, which is happening.”

Meanwhile, Congress President Sonia Gandhi discussed the joint strategy in Parliament with various opposition leaders.

He met NCP leader Sharad Pawar, J&K National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut and DMK leader TR Baalu at their residence.

‘obstructed proceedings’

The Center said the opposition was obstructing the proceedings. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi urged the opposition MPs to express regret and join the proceedings.

“I call upon Congress members, other opposition members to express regret and come to the House,” the minister said.
