The Indians were brought back from the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah, where India has set up a transit camp for the evacuees.

The Ministry of External Affairs on Monday said that Operation Kaveri has facilitated the safe return of nearly 3000 people from Sudan, even as fighting continues in the African country.

“IAF C-130J flight took off from Port Sudan carrying the 16th batch. 122 passengers aboard this flight are on their way to Jeddah. About 3000 people have now left Sudan under Operation Kaveri,” Arindam Bagchi, Official Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs.

The Indians were brought back from the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah, where India has set up a transit camp for the evacuees. The first batch of 360 people returned to New Delhi on Wednesday in a commercial flight.

Giving an update on Operation Cauvery, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Sunday that around 2300 people have reached India.

“#OperationKaveri Events. A C-130J aircraft of the Indian Air Force has landed in New Delhi with 40 passengers. About 2300 people have reached India by this flight.”

India is evacuating its nationals from conflict zones in Khartoum and other troubled areas to Port Sudan, from where they are being taken to Jeddah in heavy transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force and ships of the Indian Navy.

From Jeddah, Indians are being brought back home in commercial flights or IAF aircraft.

India has set up separate control rooms in Jeddah and Port Sudan, and the Indian Embassy in Khartoum is coordinating with them besides being in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) headquarters in Delhi.

Deadly hostilities between the army and heavily armed paramilitary forces in Khartoum and other parts of the country have entered a third week.

Since the fighting began on April 15, more than 500 people have been killed and thousands have been forced to leave their homes for safer places at home or abroad.

On Sunday, rival Sudanese forces announced an extension of a ceasefire they have largely violated.
