‘Only Alternative’: Priyanka Gandhi is now a big face on the posters of Uttar Pradesh Congress

In western Uttar Pradesh, Congress posters feature Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the big face, with the slogan “Congress is the only option in the state.” This is a clear message from the party that it will contest the UP elections with Priyanka as the face and project itself as a challenger to the main opposition party and the BJP, though the party may be seen as weak on the ground. . Party workers have been pressing for Priyanka to be officially declared as the “CM face”, but the party has so far refrained from doing so. Priyanka is currently in the state on a 5-day tour.

In the posters that News18 saw in western UP on Tuesday, it is written ‘Parivartan Ka Sankalp, Congress hi Vikalp’ (Resolve for Change, Congress is the only option) and the Pradesh Congress Committee has kept it. State Congress President Ajay Kumar Lallu told News18, “Priyanka ji is the general secretary in-charge of the party in UP and the election will be fought under her guidance and supervision. We are the only alternative to the BJP in UP as it is only Congress that has taken up public issues.” Protest on the streets and not by Samajwadi Party or BSP.

Other promotional material being prepared by the Congress for the state also centered around Priyanka’s face with slogans.UP Mein Aa Rahi Hai CongressThe posters that News18 saw in western UP have small pictures of leaders like Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

“Our leader Priyanka Gandhi ji is the only leader who is honestly raising voice for the people of the state. From raising issues in the Corona era to helping the needy people, Priyanka Gandhi ji has always led from the front. The Congress is in direct competition with the BJP in the state and the public has also understood this. There is not much difference between BJP, SP and BSP as they are engaged in doing politics of religion and caste. It is only Congress party which is talking of development of UP,” said state Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi.

Kerala model in UP

Congress is also planning to implement ‘Kerala model’ in UP by giving preference to youth in ticket distribution. Party sources have confirmed that there will be a definite focus on the youth, but one must wait and see to what extent the party adopts the Kerala model in UP.

Earlier in the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, the Congress party had given preference to youth and nearly 50 per cent of the candidates were below 50 years of age. In Uttar Pradesh too, the party is now targeting ticketing within the age group of 30 to 50 in an effort to mobilize youth ahead of crucial elections. AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi is also going to take out a state-wide pledge yatra soon. However, the party is busy with its training camps for the workers of all the districts of the state.

Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi said, ‘First we started district wise training camp, then assembly seat wise and now we have started block level training. Mainly on five points, training is being given to Congress workers and office bearers. First, he is being told about the golden history of the Congress party and the freedom movement, then about the contribution of the Congress in nation building after independence. They are also being briefed about the achievements of the party ranging from the construction of institutions, dams, development projects etc. He is also being told about the anti-people thinking of BJP and RSS and how he remained absent from the freedom movement of India. How the RSS did not hoist the Indian tricolor from 1947 to 2002 and how they used to act as spies for the British.

However, experts feel that the Kerala model in UP will not come to save the Congress party in the 2022 UP Assembly elections as the party has failed to send a direct message to any particular section of the society while scrambling for votes. Speaking to News18, veteran journalist and political commentator Parvez Ahmed said, “Adopting the Kerala model in UP will not be beneficial for the Congress because unlike Kerala, UP is known for its caste-based politics, hence the youths are given tickets here. Giving doesn’t matter much. . They may have NSUI and Youth Congress but apart from this they do not have any other Yuva Morcha organization which is active on the ground. Merely giving tickets to the youth will not give the desired result. Apart from the name of Srinivas Biwi, there is no other youth leader who has been in the headlines since the Corona period.
