Udit Narayan started his career as a playback singer in the early 1980s with the film Unees Bees and has sung in over 140 Hindi films till date. He has also done playback for films in other Indian languages and recorded several solo and duet albums. On his 66th birthday, we look at five famous songs by Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan recipients.
Papa Kehte Hain (1988)
One of the most iconic songs of the 80s is from the 1988 tragic romance film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak Ka Papa Kehte. Composed by Anand-Milind, written by poet and lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri, the song touched the hearts of youth across India thanks to Udit Narayan’s soul-stirring performance. This is the first time that Udit Narayan has done playback of all the songs with male vocals in a film. He also got his first Filmfare Award for this song.
Pehla Nasha (1992)
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’s (1992) debut Nasha became a youth anthem in the early 1990s. Composed by Jatin-Lalit, written by Majrooh Sultanpuri, this duet was performed by Udit Narayan and Sadhna Sargam. Emotions related to first love have been shown in the song.
Mitwa (2001)
Lagaan, about a rag-tag group of men from an Indian village, who participate in a cricket match against the then British Raj, won several prestigious international awards and eight national awards, including one for Udit Narayan for the Mitwa track. Won film awards. With lyrics by Javed Akhtar. Composed by AR Rahman, Sukhwinder Singh, Alka Yagnik and Srinivas have also lent their voices to the song.

Aisa Des Hai Mera (2004)
The soothing yet powerful rendition of this late Madan Mohan composition from Udit Narayan’s Veer-Zaara inspires a strong sense of nationalist pride in Indians. Composed by Javed Akhtar, this track also highlights the divisions that exist India and its neighbor Pakistan.
Yeh Tara Woh Tara (2004)
Udit Narayan won his third National Film Award for the playback of this popular track from Swades, one of the finest modern Hindi language films.
Music was given by AR Rahman.
