On ‘turbulent’ aircraft from Kabul, Indian envoy thanks IAF; Assurance of aid to Afghanistan

After going through several challenges, India on Tuesday managed to evacuate its embassy in Kabul amid the escalating humanitarian crisis. A special Air Force flight brought back the envoy along with other staff members and ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) soldiers.

“Your welcome has an impact on all of us. Thank you to the Indian Air Force who flew us in conditions that are not normal,” Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan Rudendra Tandon told ANI soon after the special flight landed in Gujarat’s Jamnagar was told by.

However, Rudendra Tandon clarified that people in Afghanistan have not been spared and the welfare of Afghans is their top priority.

Despite the efforts of the Government of India, the Indian Ambassador to Kabul, other staff members and ITBP personnel could not be brought back earlier amid the chaos at the Kabul airport and on the streets. On Sunday, two planes were deployed to evacuate the embassy staff. The first IAF C-17 aircraft with 45 personnel returned on Monday.

According to reports, the Indian Embassy was also reportedly kept under surveillance by the Taliban. And some Indian staff members were reportedly stopped when they were on their way to the airport.

In a video posted by ANI, several men were seen chanting “Bharat Mata ki Jai” as they expressed happiness on returning to their homeland.

There is speculation that overnight talks between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken may have also expedited the evacuation process.

In recent developments, India has also announced a new category of electronic visa “e-emergency ex-variety visa” to fast-track applications for Afghans wishing to leave the Taliban-controlled country.

Kabul airport resumed its operations this morning after thousands of people desperate to escape the Taliban regime were captured on the tarmac.
