On This Day in 2021: New Zealand’s Ajaz Patel Takes 10 Wickets in an Innings Against India in Mumbai

On this day in 2021: Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium has been witness to many historical events. From MS Dhoni’s World Cup winning six in 2011 to Sachin Tendulkar’s last match for India, this ground has seen it all. One such unusual feat in the game of cricket came to the fore last year when New Zealand’s Ajaz Patel became the third bowler in the history of cricket to take 10 wickets in an innings.

After drawing the first Test in Kanpur, New Zealand and India arrived in Mumbai hoping to clinch the series with a win. After winning the toss, the Indian captain did not have any second thoughts about electing to bat first. Openers Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill got India off to a good start, adding 80 runs on the board for the first wicket.

Kane Williamson bowled the ball to Ajaz Patel, who dismissed Gill for 44 and justified his captain’s confidence. New Zealand got the first breakthrough and Patel made sure to bring his team back into the game. The left-arm spinner quickly dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli for ducks.

Patel ended the day with another wicket, before India ended the day at 221 for 4. Mayank Agarwal scored 120, leading India’s batting in the match.

When play resumed on the second day, Ejaz Patel carried things forward from where he had left off the previous evening. While the other Kiwi bowlers struggled in the face of the Indian batsmen, Patel took the wickets of Wriddhiman Saha and Ravichandran Ashwin in consecutive deliveries to take six wickets in the innings.

While Mayank Agarwal continued to take on other Kiwi bowlers, he played Patel with caution before the left-arm spinner got him caught. Agarwal was caught on the backfoot trying to play Patel’s ball. It was then mat time when the New Zealand spinner scalped the remaining Indian wickets to complete his 10-wicket haul and join the elite club that also includes India’s Anil Kumble (against Pakistan in 1999) and England’s Off Spinner Jim Laker was involved. 1956 against Australia).

However, New Zealand’s batting failed to capitalize on the off-spinner’s brilliant performance and the team was bowled out for just 62 while chasing India’s 325.

India bounced back for 276 in the second innings and won by 372 runs after bowling out the Kiwis for 167 for the second time in the match. Ejaz Patel, who spent his early years in Mumbai before moving to New Zealand, picked up 4 more fours in the second innings to complete his maiden match haul of 14 wickets at the Wankhede.
