On this day in 2017: Samuel Badree completes hat-trick on IPL debut for RCB

On April 14, 2017, Samuel Badree became the second Royal Challengers Bangalore bowler to take a hat-trick in the IPL when he ran through Mumbai Indians’ batting at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Badri set a trap around the Mumbai batsmen. There was no answer to his bowling in the powerplay. West Indies chased down a target of 143 runs to 4/7 with the wickets of Parthiv Patel, Mitchell McClenaghan and Rohit Sharma in the third over of Mumbai’s innings.

The first to go was Parthiv who was caught by Chris Gayle at extra cover and chased down McClenaghan, who hit a full toss to Mandeep Singh at long on. Third was Rohit’s prized skull, which Google failed to pick up and the ball ripped through his stumps to complete Badri’s hat-trick. It was the first hat-trick of the season and 15th overall in 10 IPL seasons in 2017.

With three wickets, he became the 12th bowler to take a hat-trick in the IPL and second only to Praveen Kumar for RCB, who achieved the feat by taking the wickets of Damien Martin, Sumit Narwal and Paras Dogra against Rajasthan Royals in 2010.

Badri finished the game with figures of 4-1-9-4 with the fourth wicket as the score was 33 in 8 overs.

However, the leg-spinner’s valor did not help Bengaluru win the game as Kieron Pollard played a brilliant innings to win the game for the eventual champions in 2017.

Pollard scored 70 off 47 balls and combined with Kunal Pandya (37* off 30 balls) to put Mumbai on the line with seven balls to spare. Pollard was adjudged man of the match for his innings which included three fours and five sixes.
