On This Day in 2016: Mehdi Hasan Takes 12 Wickets as Bangladesh Stun England

On this day, 28 October, Bangladesh pulled off a heist as the hosts defeated England in the second Test to end the two-match Test series in a 1–1 draw. Mehdi Hasan, a young 19-year-old off-spinner, recorded figures of 6/82 and 6/77, taking 12 wickets and helping Bangladesh beat England by an impressive 108 runs. Tamim Iqbal also hit a century in the struggle, however, Mehdi’s spin proved fatal for England as the Alastair Cook-led side were unable to handle the spinner in the second Test in Dhaka.

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and elected to bat against the Cook-led England team in the second Test. Imrul Kayes was dismissed for 1 after being removed by Woakes.

But Tamim Iqbal and Mominul Haque shared a 170-run stand as Iqbal scored a daring century to score 190/3 before being dismissed for lbw for 104.

Haque was dropped soon after Iqbal left, and that’s where it all went downhill for the hosts. Moeen Ali collapsed extensively claiming 5/57 as Bangladesh were bowled out for 220.

However, the tourists could not do much as Shakib Al Hasan struck early to dismiss Ben Duckett for 10. Captain Cook went back after scoring 14 runs soon after Hassan was caught for lbw. Joe Root hung on, but Gary Balance was unable to handle Mehdi’s spin and was left behind in the end. The British were reeling on 69/5.

Root played a brilliant innings of 56 before being dismissed lbw by Taijul Islam. While it all seemed to be lost for England, Chris Woakes (46) and Adil Rashid (44) stepped up and put on a solid 99-run partnership to help England post 244 runs on the board, taking a slim lead of 24 runs. Of. Mehdi created his magic once again registering figures of 6/82.

Openers Iqbal and Imrul Kayes shared a 65-run partnership for Bangladesh, after which Ansari dismissed Iqbal for 40. Mominul Haque returned to the pavilion after scoring a run as Adil found his rhythm with the ball.

Mahmudullah (47) and Shakib Al Hasan (41) made crucial contributions before Bangladesh once again as the riot went on with Adil Ben Stokes. Bangladesh were bowled out for 296 but did enough to challenge England.

Chasing 273 for victory, England got off to a stellar start as the openers scored half-centuries as Cook (59) and Duckett (56) scored 100 runs before Duckett was removed by Mirage. Root was the next batsman to come and go early as Shakib shook the visitors.

Mehdi and Shakib took control from there as the two spinners were tearing the English line-up. Bangladesh bundled out England for 164, a total of four batsmen had ducks, winning the second Test by 104 runs, with Mehdi claiming another six, making it 12/159 in the second Test.

Mehdi took a total of 19 wickets in the 2 Test matches he played and was adjudged the Player of the Series.
