On this day in 2013: Rohit Sharma slams first of his three ODI double centuries against Australia

India’s opener Rohit Sharma is no match when it comes to the 50-over format. It was in 2013 that the limited-overs vice-captain created history by becoming only the third Indian batsman to score an ODI double century. before rohit Sachin Tendulkar And Virender Sehwag was the only two Indian batsman to score 200+ runs in the ODI format.

Rohit achieved the elusive feat during the seventh and final One Day International between Australia and India at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The 34-year-old played a brilliant and important innings of 209 runs. He faced 158 balls in the middle and hit 12 fours and 16 sixes.

Rohit’s innings came at a crucial time as the ODI series was tied at 2-2. Born in Mumbai, this brilliant innings led India to a 57-run victory and helped them win the seven-match ODI series 3-2. The last ODI between the two sides started with India batting first.

On the basis of Rohit’s 209 runs, India made a huge total of 383 runs for the loss of six wickets. Apart from Rohit, skipper MS Dhoni and opener Shikhar Dhawan looked good with the willow.

Dhoni was the second highest run-scorer for India with 62 runs, while Dhawan scored 60 runs. The Australian bowlers had a bad office day as all bowlers except Shane Watson conceded runs at an economy rate of 7.5+.

Chasing 384 runs, Australia put up a good fight. James Faulkner was the standout player for the Men in Yellow squad as he played a fine 116-ball 73-ball knock. At one point in the game, Australia looked to be the favorites to win the match, however, the hosts’ bowling unit did well in the middle.

Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja were the bowlers’ picks for the hosts as they took three wickets. Ravichandran Ashwin returned with two scalps while Vinay Kumar had one under his belt to help India wrap up the win.
