On this day in 1993: Vinod Kambli joins elite list of batsmen to score consecutive double-tons

On this day in 1993, veteran Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli registered a back-to-back double century in Test cricket to join an illustrious club.

He achieved the feat in March 1993 during a solitary Test match between India and Zimbabwe at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi, now known as the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Earlier, he scored a match-winning 224 runs against England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Riding on his double centuries, India won the Delhi Test at the Wankhede as well as against England and Zimbabwe respectively.

At that time, he was the third cricketer after Sir Donald Bradman and Wally Hammond to score consecutive double centuries in the longest format of the game. Later, Kumar Sangakkara (2007), Michael Clarke (2012) and Virat Kohli (2017) also joined the elite list.

How the match between India and Zimbabwe got postponed?

Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin won the toss and decided to bat first.

Kambli went to bat at number three after opener Manoj Prabhakar fell early. He then took India’s innings forward by sharing a 100-run partnership with other openers Navjot Sidhu, Sachin Tendulkar and Azharuddin.

He was eventually dismissed for 227 by John Trakos, who finished the innings with three wickets.

Kambli played an innings of 301 balls and hit 28 fours. Driven by his double century, India posted a mammoth total of 536/7 before declaring their innings in 132 overs.

In reply, India bundled out the touring team for 322 runs to enforce the follow-on. Andy Flower scored 115 runs in 236 balls while Grant Flower contributed 96 runs.

Anil Kumble and Maninder Singh took three wickets each for India.

Zimbabwe lost the match by an innings and 13 runs during their second innings at 201/10 in 95.5 overs.

Kumble and Maninder shared nine wickets during Zimbabwe’s second innings.
