Apart from being a prolific batsman, former Pakistan cricketer Javed Miandad was known for his antics on and off the field. He was one of the most reliable batsmen in the Pakistan line-up during his playing days. Miandad’s bat has made many famous innings for the Men in Green and even won many matches. While he was known for his brilliant batting, people also remember the cricketer for his memorable skirmishes on the pitch.
His mimicry of Indian wicketkeeper Kiran More during the 1992 World Cup match between India and Pakistan in Sydney was one of his many antics on the field.
The match in 1992 marked the first World Cup meeting between arch-rivals India and Pakistan, with Sachin Tendulkar’s 54 and Ajay Jadeja’s 46, scoring 216 runs on the board in 49 overs. Out to bat, Pakistan lost opener Inzamam-ul-Haq for 2 runs and Zahid Fazal also went back after scoring a few runs. It was Aamer Sohail and Miandad, who formed a partnership and stabilized the sinking ship. Both shared a total of 88 runs for Pakistan for the third wicket.
During his innings, Miandad had a brief battle with More. A heated argument ensued after More’s appeal off a delivery from Tendulkar, which went down the leg-side after Miandad missed an attempt to link it well. Miandad was disappointed and later complained to the umpire. Despite the decision not being in his favour, More did not hold back and removed the bails trying to get a run out in the same over, even when Miandad was inside the crease.
After More’s attempt, Miandad was seen making fun of him as he was shouting animatedly. With a bat in both hands, Miandad jumped up and down in a hilarious manner. For cricket lovers, this moment became one for the ages.
Years later, More had revealed while commenting during a game that Miandad was trying to imitate and mock him after relentlessly appealing from behind the stumps.
