Omicron: EU nations, US post fresh Covid surges

Omicron continued to wreak havoc across the US and Europe, replacing the Delta version and becoming a major strain causing record infections among its citizens.

The United States on Monday reported 254,091 cases, according to data shared by the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. Several states in the US have reported their record jumps since last year, with an increase in the tally due to the holiday season.

According to the news agency AP, health officials in the US state of Arizona said that 14,192 new cases have been registered in the state. Arizona previously reported more than 17,000 cases on January 3 last year. Arizona is one of the other states to record a seven-day average with 3,134 new Covid-19 cases, registering a 13% spike compared to the earlier record of 2,767 cases per day. For seven days during November last year. Oregon also joined Kansas in recording a record seven-day high, while Mississippi reported hospitalizations due to Covid.

According to a Reuters report, New York, Washington and Florida are among the states where New York’s positivity rate currently stands at 33%.

The US currently has 14.51 million active cases and recorded 2,564 fresh Covid-19 deaths, taking the death toll to 848,826.

Omicron continues to infect Europe

European countries and the UK face a new challenge of rising COVID-19 cases as Omicron replaces the delta version in several countries. Britain reported 157,758 new cases on Monday, marking an increase after the Christmas and New Year holidays. UK PM Boris Johnson said the rising number of cases could mean more pressure on the UK’s health service the National Health Service (NHS) and could go on for weeks.

“We have to accept that the pressure on our hospitals on our NHS is going to be considerable and probably greater in the next few weeks,” Johnson was quoted as saying by the AP news agency.

France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands also reported an increase in fresh Covid-19 cases. France, where lawmakers are debating the introduction of a vaccine pass, reported 67,461 fresh cases on Monday. Germany and Italy recorded 26,345 and 68,052 respectively.

The Netherlands and Spain, where there were widespread protests against COVID regulations and vaccine mandates, also saw an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases. Spain named the country’s health agency 93,190. Nearly 100,000 fresh cases reported with the reporting of New cases and 42 deaths. The Dutch health agency reported 14,536 new cases, with 14 deaths.

Australia cases cross 500,000 mark

Australia reported on Tuesday that it has passed the grim tally of 500,000 Covid-19 cases as the nation reported 43,852 fresh Covid-19 cases taking the tally to 543,839. The nation also reported four deaths taking the death toll to 2,270. Australia’s most populous state, New South Wales, reported 23,131 cases, with more than 1,300 people hospitalized. The other Australian state of Victoria also reported 14,020 cases on Tuesday and said more than 500 patients were hospitalized, with more than 100 inpatients, news agency AP reported.
