Omicron cases cross 300 mark in India; States imposed restrictions to contain the variant

Omicron cases in India crossed the 300-mark on Thursday with fresh cases being reported from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.

The data published by the Union Health Ministry on Thursday morning showed Maharashtra with 65 cases of the new Omicron variant – the maximum among the states. Delhi is second on the list with 64 reported cases. 24 cases have been reported in Telangana, 21 in Rajasthan and 19 in Karnataka.

Several states and union territories have passed orders banning gatherings on Christmas and New Years to contain the spread of the virus.

On Wednesday, Uttarakhand had reported its first case of the Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus infection. Uttarakhand Director General of Health Tripti Bahuguna said a 23-year-old woman, who had recently returned from Scotland, tested positive for the Omicron variant.

In another development, two foreign returnees, who had tested positive for Covid-19, were found infected with the Omicron variant, according to news agency PTI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a meeting on the COVID-19 situation in the country, amid a surge in the Omicron coronavirus cases.
