Officials say cargo ship caught fire, toxic gas released off Canada’s Pacific coast

A container ship has caught fire and is pumping toxic gas off Canada’s Pacific coast, officials said Saturday.

As CBC News reports, the Jim Kingston ship was bound for Vancouver, when the flames broke out, the fire was reported to the Coast Guard at around 11 p.m. local time.

The Canadian Coast Guard said in a statement on its website: “The ship is on fire and toxic gas is coming out.”

“An emergency zone has been established at Constance Bank within 1 mile of the anchored container ship Jim Kingston,” the agency said.

It is not clear what caused the fire.

The Coast Guard said the ship contained more than 52,000 kilograms of chemicals located in two fire containers, CBC News said.

According to media reports, at least ten crew members have been evacuated safely.
