Cuttack: Two dead after a portion of a British era bridge connecting Taldanda Canal collapsed Chhatra Bazaar And Malgodown The city collapsed in Cuttack on Wednesday evening. Rescuers were trying to find out if anyone else was trapped under the rubble.
DCP Prateek Singh said that two people died in the accident, while another was injured. He was admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital after being rescued from the debris. In the preliminary investigation, both the deceased are suspected to be employees working in Taldanada Canal Road Extension Chhatra Bazar. Singh said that the identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained.
Police said the incident happened around 7.30 pm, which is the peak time. personnel of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) pressed for action to rescue the stranded persons. The rescue work was going on till the time of writing this report.
Police sources said that near the bridge made of bricks, excessive excavation was done by the firm engaged in the work of Taladanda canal.
Collector Bhabani Shankar Chaani He said that the unfortunate accident took place during the renovation and expansion work of Taldanda Canal road.
“Our immediate priority is to rescue the injured and those trapped. If any deficiency is found, we will take action.”
Dibakar LenkaA trader from Chhatra Bazar said that the company engaged in the canal work did not take adequate safety measures while carrying out the repair work, which resulted in such an accident. Strict action should be taken against Lenka Joda contractor.
Every day many traders and retail vegetable vendors gather at the bridge in the evening to sell vegetables. While Chhatra Bazar is the largest vegetable market in the state, Malgodown is one of the largest grocery markets. As only part of one side has collapsed, connectivity between the two markets remains intact, although the British-era bridge is already in a dilapidated condition.
