Odisha tops state ranking for implementation of National Food Security Act

The government on Tuesday said Odisha topped the state ranking for implementation of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) through ration shops, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. Union Minister of Food and Consumer Affairs Piyush Goyal released the ‘State Ranking Index for NFSA 2022’ during a conference of State Food Ministers on Food and Nutrition Security in India.

Tripura has topped in the special category states (Northeast states, Himalayan states and island states). Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim are in second and third place. The report said that despite logistical limitations in these areas, they demonstrated a high level of achievement competing with the general category states.

As per the government’s ranking, Odisha ranks first with a score of 0.836, followed by Uttar Pradesh (0.797) and Andhra Pradesh (0.794). Gujarat ranks fourth, followed by Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman Diu, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand.

Kerala is ranked 11th, Telangana (12th), Maharashtra (13th), West Bengal (14th) and Rajasthan (15th). Punjab is ranked 16th, followed by Haryana, Delhi, Chhattisgarh and Goa.

The current version of the index measures the effectiveness of NFSA implementation primarily through operations and initiatives under TPDS (Targeted Public Distribution System).
