Odisha: PPE to protect traffic police from pollution and infection in Bhubaneswar. Bhubaneswar News – Times of India

Bhubaneswar: If everything goes according to plan, traffic police at major junctions OrissaCapital of Bhubaneswar will soon sport Smart Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)PPE) to remove air pollution and infection.
The Commissionerate Police has supplied five pairs of these protective gear to its traffic personnel to understand whether the idea is feasible and whether these PPEs are comfortable to wear.
These have been designed by AUUM Platforms, a startup under the brand name of Swasner. The PPE comes with a face shield and a hoodie, a small battery-powered fan, an air filter and a high-quality face mask.
“We have asked our traffic staff to use these PPEs for a few days. If they feel comfortable working in them for several hours, we will do bulk purchases. Our aim is to keep our employees away from pollution and virus,” said police commissioner Soumendra Priyadarshi.
Sai Sambit Nayak, CEO, AUUM, said that Swasner is designed to filter the air and protect the user’s personal space with KN95 protection, allowing the user to breathe pure air. He added that the kit comes with a battery life of over eight hours.
The traffic police have not faced any inconvenience in using the product so far. “The PPE has a transparent visor and face access zipper. The fan helps us to get rid of sweat. The jacket has utility pockets, which are quite handy for slipping small things into. During a pandemic, we can have contactless conversations with motorists and rule violators wearing these. Our voice can be heard clearly from inside the face shield from outside,” said a traffic constable.
There are about 500 traffic personnel in the capital city, who are exposed to pollution and breathe toxic air from vehicles every day. To make the traffic cops look smart, the Police Commissionerate in 2008 provided them with dirty white uniforms, cowboy caps, black belts with crimped edges and goggles.
“We are conducting regular health check-up camps for the traffic personnel as they are exposed to pollution. Efforts are being made to upgrade the traffic checkpoints under the Smart City project.
