Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday honored Tokyo Paralympic gold medalist shuttler Pramod Bhagat with a cash prize of Rs 6 crore at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium here.

Bhagat has also been offered a Group-A level government job. On 4 September, Bhagat won badminton gold by defeating Daniel Bethel of Great Britain 21–14, 21–17 in the men’s singles SL3 event in Tokyo.

Congratulating Bhagat, Patnaik said, “It gives me immense pleasure to congratulate you on your outstanding achievement. Your victory was and will always be a proud moment for the entire nation. You have truly defined how sports life is. You have inspired a generation of sportsmen and para-sportsmen to make their own destiny.”

He said the state would continue to support Bhagat in his future journey.

The shuttler, on his part, expressed his gratitude to the Chief Minister for his continued support and inspiration in his Paralympic journey.

Earlier in the day, Bhagat was accorded a warm welcome after landing at the Biju Patnaik International Airport here.
