O’Brien is allergic to chaat-papri so can eat fish curry: Entertaining twist to war of words as center ups ante vs. opposition

It may not have been a productive week in Parliament, but the gloves are off, with an amusing twist between the Center and the opposition.

A day after Trinamool Congress’ Derek O’Brien compared the passage of bills to “making papri chaat”, Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said fish curry can be had if the TMC leader is allergic to papri chaat, but “Do not make the Parliament” fish market”.

“If he is allergic to ‘chaat-papri’, he can eat fish curry. But don’t make Parliament a fish market. Unfortunately, the manner in which the work is being done as part of a conspiracy to hurt the dignity of Parliament, has never been seen before.

“If you hurt the dignity of Parliament then such activities are neither in their interest nor ours,” he said. It is also not in the interest of the traditions of Parliament.”

O’Brien’s tweet had also angered Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who without naming anyone condemned the “derogatory” comments about parliamentary procedures.

The Prime Minister said that his government is committed to the interests of the people and this is one of the reasons why he asked all his ministers and MPs to ensure maximum attendance in the House and parliamentary proceedings.

The opposition has been targeting the government over the Pegasus espionage controversy and farmers’ protests, resulting in a complete stalling of the monsoon session. Both the Houses witnessed repeated disruptions and adjournments as the opposition demanded discussion on the issues.

Interestingly, O’Brien seemed to be in no mood to relent as he kept a plate of ‘papri chaat’ at the TMC office after the Prime Minister rubbished his comments.
